Application

What are the admission requirements?

To be eligible for admission to the curriculum leading to the degree of Master of Medical Sciences, a candidate shall:

  1. comply with the General Regulations;

  2. comply with the Regulations for Taught Postgraduate Curricula;
  3. hold a Bachelor's degree with honours of this University or a qualification of equivalent standard from this University or from another comparable institution accepted for this purpose;

  4. satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination if required; and

  5. for a candidate who is seeking admission on the basis of qualification from a university or comparable institution outside of Hong Kong of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English, shall satisfy the University English language requirement applicable to higher degrees as prescribed under General Regulation G2(b).

Do I need prior clinical experience to apply?

No. While clinical experience is beneficial, it is not mandatory. Applicants from biomedical sciences, life sciences, and related fields are welcome.

Can I switch specialisations after admission?

Students are not allowed to change their specialisations upon admission to the programme. In exceptional circumstances, such requests may be considered on a case-by-case basis, subject to the approval by the Faculty Board. Such approvals are rare and must be sought at the earliest possible stage of the programme.

How recent should my IELTS or TOEFL test be?

Starting from the 2026 intake, IELTS and TOEFL tests must be taken within two years prior to September 1 of the admission year. For TOEFL, you must upload a scanned copy and request Education Testing Service (ETS) to send the score electronically to The University of Hong Kong (Institution Code: 9671, Department Code: 99).

Are reference letters required?

No. Reference letters are optional. If available, upload them in PDF format under “Other Certificate(s).” No invitation emails will be sent to referees.

Do I need to submit original documents?

No. Originals are not required at the time of application. You may be asked to provide them if your application is accepted.

Why are there two deadlines for application?

You are strongly advised to apply in Round 1 (deadline: March 31, 2026) as this will give you the best chance of securing an offer. Subject to availability of places after Round 1 offers, the programme may accept applications from local applicants in Round 2 (deadline: May 31, 2026). 

Do I need to pay for the application?

Application for admission fee (non-refundable): HK$ 600

My transcript is not in English. Do I need to provide a translation?

Documents which are not in English should be accompanied by a formally translated version in English. 

For qualifications obtained from universities in Chinese Mainland, the following documents issued by issued by CHSI / CSSD [中国高等教育学生信息网(学信网)] are required:

  1. Verification Report of China Higher Education Student's Academic Transcript (中国高等学校学生成绩验证报告), which contains complete records of the years of study and examination results; and
  2. Online Verification Report of Higher Education Qualification Certificate (教育部学历证书电子注册备案表); and
  3. Online Verification Report of Higher Education Degree Certificate (中国高等教育学位在线验证报告).

 

Do I need to attend an interview for admission?

We normally do not conduct interviews for admission. However, interviews might be offered on a case-by-case basis. 

Fees and Funding

How much is the programme fee?

Composition fee is: 

Part-time mode: HK$99,000 per year/ Full-time mode: HK$198,000 per year

Does the MMedSc programme offer scholarship?

The MMedSc programme is supported by the UGC’s Hong Kong Future Talents Scholarship Scheme for Advanced Studies for the 2025/26 and 2026/27 intakes for selected local students. Please click here for more details.

Is there any financial aid provided by HKU?

University funds are in general used to supplement government grants and loans. A limited number of bursaries and loans are available, primarily to local students who are in financial need, but they are of limited value and should not be seen as an alternative to Government support. Applications are open in early September each year. Emergency assistance is also available at any time during the year. For more information, please refer to CEDARS website

Programme and Study

What is the Master of Medical Science (MMedSc) programme?

The Master of Medical Sciences (MMedSc) Programme, the longest-running taught postgraduate programme at the LKS Faculty of Medicine since 1977. Our curriculum integrates academic excellence with applied knowledge to address the evolving demands of the medical and healthcare landscape.

Students will be engaged in diverse research opportunities across clinical and biomedical sciences, with the option to undertake either a capstone project or a dissertation. The curriculum promotes a collaborative learning environment, facilitated by distinguished faculty and industry experts.

Offering 7 specialisations within 2 tracks — Clinical Investigation and Genomics and Precision Medicine—the MMedSc Programme equips graduates with the advanced skills necessary for impactful careers in research, clinical practice, and healthcare profession.

What is the length of study and graduation requirements?

The curriculum shall normally extend over one academic year of full-time study or two academic years of part-time study. Students are required to complete satisfactorily all required written, practical and/or clinical work and continuous assessments and/or by written examinations as well as a 27-credit capstone experience.

When does the MMedSc programme start?

The programme starts on 1 September each year. 

Who is the MMedSc programme for?

What is the typical class schedule?

Classes are usually held on weekday evenings and Saturdays (occasionally Sundays).

Where are classes held?

Classes usually take place at HKU Main Campus, HKUMed Campus, and Queen Mary Hospital, which are located in Pokfulam, Hong Kong.

Can the capstone project be industry-based or must it be academic research?

Both options are possible. Depending on your specialisation and career goals, projects can be academic or industry-focused, provided they meet programme requirements and are approved by your supervisor.

Are there opportunities for clinical attachments or hands-on research?

Yes. Depending on your specialisation, you may participate in laboratory work, clinical attachments, and research projects supervised by HKUMed faculty.

Are there opportunities to publish research during the programme?

Yes. Students undertaking research-intensive projects often have opportunities to co-author publications or present findings at conferences.

What career paths do MMedSc graduates typically pursue?

Graduates work in diverse roles such as medical researchers, laboratory managers and/or technologist, clinical coordinators, and industry specialists in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare technology. Many also progress to PhD studies or leadership positions in healthcare.

Is the programme recognised for CME/CPD points? Which professional bodies accredit it?

Yes. The MMedSc programme is accredited for CME/CPD points by multiple professional bodies, including the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and various specialty colleges. Details are listed on the Accreditation page.

Are occasional students eligible for CME/CPD points or advanced standing?

Occasional students may earn CME/CPD points for completed courses, and they may apply for advanced standing of up to 12 credits if they enrol in the full MMedSc programme within 5 years.
